Emotional Intelligence: Empathy

This clip from the movie “Inside Out” is a beautiful illustration of the difference between empathy and sympathy. Being sympathetic is well-intentioned, but often doesn’t actually make someone feel better because it doesn’t allow them an opportunity to share what they are going through. Practicing empathy (putting yourself in another person’s shoes) builds trust, but most of all makes someone feel valued and understood, and that they are not alone in what they are going through.
